JLMM send volunteers to Asia and Pacific-region.
The volunteers are called Lay missionary and live together with the local people sharing joys and sorrows through various activities.
Lay missionaries try to practice the words of Jesus Christ through their own lives and activities just like Jesus did.

JLMM seeks applications for Lay missionary from August every year.
JLMM Lay missionaries operate activities for medical care, environment, agriculture and support of women and children together with the local people, and support programs of social welfare and development organized by local Catholic churches.
After seven monthsÅftraining in Japan, missionaries study local language in the country (mission area), and work there for two years (extension possible).

The first Lay Missionaries Meeting was held from 2nd to 5th September, 2001 with all the current missionaries.

1981		Founded by Fr. Michael Siegel
1982		Started sending missionaries through VMM, UK
Dec 1983		Registered with Catholic Bishops' Conference of Japan
1987		Renamed Lay Missionary Movement
Sept 2001		The first Lay Missionaries Meeting was held in Koh Samui, Thailand. "Koh Samui Declaration" was adopted. Total of 60 Lay missionaries were sent to Asian countries till 2001.
Apr 2002		Became independent from Catholic Bishops' Conference of Japan. Renamed Japan Lay Missionary Movement. Became an authorized organization of Catholic Bishops' Conference of Japan.
2007		Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the foundation.
